‘Neck and shoulder pain are common conditions that can significantly impact daily activities and quality of life, often stemming from various underlying conditions. Symptoms typically include localized pain, stiffness, reduced range of motion, and sometimes radiating discomfort into the arms or upper back. Common conditions include muscle strain, myofascial pain, cervical spondylosis (age-related wear and tear of the cervical spine), herniated discs, tendonitis, and poor posture, often exacerbated by prolonged periods of sitting, especially with improper ergonomics. Causes can range from acute injuries (such as whiplash) to chronic issues related to repetitive motions, stress, or degeneration over time. Treatments often involve a combination of self-care, physical therapy, medication (such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs), preventive selfcare and cognitive behavioral therapy, muscle and joint injections and in some cases, surgical interventions. Implementing ergonomic adjustments in work environments and practicing regular stretching or strengthening exercises can also help in both prevention and management of neck and shoulder pain.
